Core Grade Point Average

Core Grade Point Average

About core curriculum GPA

Core curriculum GPA allows for a separate GPA from the cumulative GPA. This can be useful if your academic policy requires students to maintain a specific GPA for a set of courses in addition to their overall, cumulative GPA.

For example, your institution requires students maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or be subject to academic dismissal. Nursing students must maintain this GPA and maintain a GPA of at least 3.0 for their biology classes. You can configure Campus Cafe to calculate this biology GPA in addition to their cumulative GPA.

Degree level and core designation limitations

Only one core GPA can be calculated per degree level. Students who need multiple Core GPAs should have their programs separated by degree level to achieve this outcome.

Similarly, a core course will appear as a core course for anyone who takes that course. To allow students for whom the course is not considered a core course to take the course, but not have a core GPA calculated (or to not have said course affect the student's Core GPA), creating two courses - core and non-core - is an effective solution.

Turn on core GPA and set its label on the transcript and degree audit

If you want to use the core GPA function, you must turn it on.

You also must tell Campus Cafe how to label it on a degree audit or transcript. For example, you may label it “Core GPA,” “Mjr GPA,” Prg GPA” or the like. The label can be a maximum of four characters, appears before “GPA” and applies to all students in all academic programs.

  1. Go to Admin > Custom Control.

  2. In Search enter GPA_CORE.

  3. Click the pencil.

  4. In Parameter Value 1 enter Y.

  5. Click Save & Back.

  6. In Search enter GPA_CORE_TSCRIPT_LBL_TXT.

  7. Click the pencil.

  8. In Parameter Value 1 enter a maximum of four characters that appear before “GPA” on the transcript. For example you may want to enter “Mjr”.

  9. Click Save & Back.

  10. In Search enter GPA_CORE_DAUDIT_LBL_TXT.

Designate a core course

You need to tell Campus Cafe which courses belong to which core GPAs. For example, perhaps all your junior and senior level biology courses belong to the biology core GPA biology.

  1. Go to Filters > Courses and locate the course.

  2. Next to the course click the pencil.

  3. Click the Codes tab.

  4. In Core Curriculum select the core GPA.
